Efficacy of prolonged action nifedipine (20 mg once daily) was studied
in 44 patients with stable arterial hypertension. Patients were divid
ed into groups according to end diastolic left ventricular dimension a
nd cardiac output obtained by echocardiography, Optimal blood pressure
decrease was achieved In patients with left ventricular end=diastolic
dimension 5 cm or more and cardiac output equal to or exceeding 5.5 l
/min, Hypotensive effect of nifedipine rose when the dose was increase
d up to 40 mg/day. Long acting nifedipine produced regulatory action o
n hemodynamics in arterial hypertension.
