Reactions of dibromide ions Br-2(-) in melts of potassium bromide cont
aining bivalent iron were studied using a pulse-radiolysis technique.
It was shown that a product of the fast reaction of the solvated elect
ron with Fe2+ rapidly reacts with Br-2(-) (with a rate constant of 9.2
x 10(10) dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1)). The reaction of Br-2(-) with bivalent
iron ions occurs at a low rate constant (< 10(6) dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1)),
which is presumably due to a rather high oxidation-reduction potentia
l Fe3+/Fe2+.
