NEUROLOGIC AND DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOMES FOLLOWING PEDIATRIC CARDIAC-SURGERY

The successful early repair of congenital heart disease has placed the focus on the long-term outcome for surviving patients. This article r eviews the neurologic risks of cardiopulmonary bypass, deep hypothermi a, and circulatory arrest. Potential neurologic and developmental sequ elae in both the immediate postoperative period and the long term are discussed, with a review of current, research-based literature.
