Abstract
A new parameter ($) over bar b characterizing covalent behaviour of 4f orbit has been developed on the basis of spectral properties of triva lent lanthanides and used to tested the interaction between 4f electro ns and ligands for many of the lanthanides compounds. The factors infl uencing covalent bonding and changing law of covalency have been discu ssed by the new parameter.
