The sorption property of a novel-type adsorbent prepared by in situ pr
ecipitation of Fe(OH)(3) on the surface of activated Al2O3 was studied
. The characteristics of the electric double layer formed on the inter
face of the adsorbent/electrolyte show that the amount of the charged
groups on the surface is less compared to that of the supports. The re
ason lies in the fact that the water used during the preparation of th
e adsorbent has partly been bound to the active centres. It was found
that in the range of pH(eq.) < 6.3 the surface charge of the adsorbent
was positive, the surface was covered by (S-OH2+) groups. The adsorbe
nt/electrolyte double layer can be characterized by the modified Stern
-theory. The adsorption of ions took place by both electrostatic and c
hemical interactions. In solutions of pH(eq.) < 6.3 to H2PO4- ions wer
e bound to the surface by ligand exchange.
