Aliphatic and aromatic diesters of phosphoric acid were tested as dopa
nts improving processability of polyaniline (PANI) in its doped (condu
cting) state. It has been found that both aromatic and aliphatic diest
ers effectively protonate polyaniline, inducing at the same time its s
olubility. The protonated state has been confirmed by three independen
t spectroscopic methods (FTIR, Raman, and UV-vis-NIR). Both aromatic a
nd aliphatic diesters of phosphoric acid plasticize polyaniline which,
in turn, allows for the preparation of highly conducting films of PAN
I or highly conducting blends of PANI with classical nonconducting pol
ymers by thermal processing. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
