The reaction of RhCl3 . 3H(2)O with tert-butanol at 70 degrees C gives
mu-dichloro-2-methyl-(1,2,3-eta)-propenylrhodium], [Rh{2-CH3(eta(3)-C
3H4)}Cl-2](n) (2) in high yield. The ESCA and IR spectra and the react
ion of 2 with CO indicate for this compound a polymeric structure with
two chlorine bridges. A reaction mechanism based on the easy dehydrat
ion of tert-butanol and on the high stability of the 2-methylallyl rad
ical is proposed.
