The removal of oxygen from thin CoO layers on Co(<10(1)over bar 0>) un
der the action of H-2 proceeds simultaneously through thinning of the
oxide layer by removal of oxygen from the oxide/metal interface region
and through lowering of the oxygen concentration in the remaining oxi
de. This conclusion has been reached by using a high-energy ion channe
ling and blocking technique in combination with ellipsometry and nucle
ar reaction analysis.
