Abstract
Ca-alpha-sialon can be synthesised by simultaneous carbothermal reduct ion-nitridation of a mixture of fine SiO2, Al2O3, CaSiO3 and carbon bl ack powder at 1500 degrees C. For the first time a single phase materi al is obtained in a one step process. The main intermediate product in these processes is a beta-sialon with a low z-value (z < 1.2). After formation of this beta-sialon the calcium is incorporated in the latti ce to form the Ca-alpha-sialon.
