A 12-month-old, male Domestic Shorthaired cat was presented for examin
ation with generalized weakness, gingivitis, lingual ulcers, and lymph
adenopathy. Hepatozoon sp. gametocytes were demonstrated in blood smea
rs and elevated serum levels of creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogen
ase were observed. The cat recovered after treatment with oral doxycyc
line. Serum samples taken at the time of examination and 1 year later
were positive for Hepatozoon canis using an indirect fluorescent antib
ody assay for H. canis.
