Abstract
In DARWIN'S ''Origin of Species'' of 1859 and in other writings there are numerous empirical observations and instinct explanations of anima l behaviour. Thorough analysis shows that DARWIN'S behavioural data ar e often interpreted psychologically as ''expression'', ''conciousness' ', and ''intelligence''. Basic instincts according to DARWIN are gener ated by custom behaviour and genetically acquired properties. This is a neo-Larmarckian explanations. DARWIN therefore may not be regarded a s the founder of ethology.
