Abstract
This paper investigates the role of hierarchy in thr systematic approa ch to the design of fuzzy logic controllers (FLC's), The I;ey concept here is that the implementation of fuzzy engines at higher levels of t he control hierarchy (where more reasoning is involved) yields more ve rsatile fuzzy controllers with generally fewer control rules. At the s ame time, the structured nature of a hierarchical approach considerabl y simplifies the design procedure.
