Effective formulae for the single-phase periodic solution of the An sy
stem are obtained. The solution depends on a complete set of four comp
lex parameters (Riemann invariants). The derivation of Whitham equatio
ns which describe a slow evolution of the modulated periodic solution
is presented. The general theory is illustrated by application to the
problem of soliton creation on the front of a sharp pulse.
