Activity of anaerobic saccharolytic bacteria was studied over the cour
se of one year in the littoral sediments of freshwater, eutrophic Belo
e Lake. The number of these bacteria ranged from 10(2) to 10(5) cells
per 1 ml of wet silt. Glucose and acetate concentrations in silt water
varied from 0 to 7.2 and from 1.2 to 30.0 mg/l, respectively. The dyn
amics of lactate, butyrate, acetate, formate, CO2, and methane product
ion were investigated using uniformly labeled C-14-glucose.
