N. Borochov et al., PHASE-BEHAVIOR OF MIXTURES OF CHOLESTEROL AND SATURATED PHOSPHATIDYLGLYCEROLS, Chemistry and physics of lipids, 76(1), 1995, pp. 85-92
The interaction of cholesterol with a series of saturated phosphatidyl
glycerols was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and
X-ray diffraction. We find that the miscibility of cholesterol in pho
sphatidylglycerol bilayers is lower than in the corresponding phosphat
idylcholine bilayers and decreases with increasing acyl chain length o
f the phospholipid. The influence of the negative charge of the phosph
atidylglycerol on cholesterol miscibility is discussed.
