Abstract
Reliable measurement of informal sector employment has long been probl ematic. Basing their work on a recent ICLS definition, the authors con ducted pilot studies in Pakistan to determine how far information that can be obtained through existing statistical instruments permits diff erentiation between employment in formal and informal sectors. A house hold survey separated the employed in this respect and identified esta blishments for which they worked. An enterprise survey then questioned own-account workers and employers, enabling a comparison with data fr om the household survey and the identification of the questions most u seful for making this distinction. Slight changes to Pakistan's Labour Force Survey are proposed.
