Pm. Spengler et al., A SCIENTIST PRACTITIONER MODEL OF PSYCHOLOGICAL-ASSESSMENT - IMPLICATIONS FOR TRAINING, PRACTICE AND RESEARCH, The Counseling psychologist, 23(3), 1995, pp. 506-534
We propose a prototype for a scientist-practitioner model of psycholog
ical assessment that is a reformulation of the Pepinskys's model of th
e counselor-as-scientist. We integrate with the Pepinskys's model theo
ry and research on human inference, judgment, and decision making, res
earch on threats to accurate clinical prediction (e.g., confirmatory h
ypothesis testing), and findings about counselor characteristics assoc
iated with effective judgment processes (e.g., cognitive complexity).
Issues related to counseling psychologists' application of research fi
ndings and use of scientific reasoning in counseling practice are expl
ored, including implications for training research, and practice.
