The perovskite structure type was early recognized as the structural a
ncestor of high-T-c superconductors. The similarity with Aurivillius p
hases was also noticed for the Bi-Sr-Cu-O superconductors since the fi
rst structural studies. An even closer analogy with Sillen phases is n
ow pointed out, and the basic principles of a unified crystal chemical
systematics of oxide superconductors is presented. Structural represe
ntations through condensed models are also briefly described.
