Binuclear copper(II) complexes with eight different 2-hydroxyacetophen
one N-4-substituted thiosemicarbazones have been prepared and characte
rized. IR, electronic, H-1 NMR and ESR spectra of the complexes, as we
ll as IR, UV and H-1 NMR spectra of the thiosemicarbonazones, have bee
n obtained. The crystal structure for the copper(II) complex of 2-hydr
oxyacetophenone 3-hexamethyleneiminylthiosemicarbazone, [Cu(Aphexim)](
2), has been solved and its structural properties are compared to a re
cently reported nickel(II) complex. Both the thiosemicarbazones and th
eir copper(II) complexes show no growth inhibitory activity against As
pergillus niger, but many have considerable activity against Paecilomy
ces variotii. Further, there is a relationship between the antifungal
activity and the size of the N-4 substituent for both the thiosemicarb
azones and their copper(II) complexes.
