A 7-mo-old female Doberman Pinscher undergoing antibiotic treatment fo
r tonsillitis was presented In near collapse with markedly low blood p
ressure, tachycardia, dilatation of pupils (non-responsive to light),
and gastrointestinal distress. Since the owner could provide no histor
y of significant toxin exposure, general supportive and non-specific t
oxicologic treatment protocols were initiated. Within 4 h marked impro
vement was observed. The owner's wife revealed that promethazine suppo
sitories had been administered at a toxic level to control the vomitio
n accompanying the tonsillitis.
