Abstract
Mineral oil containing MoS2 can be used as a lubricant in cold forging and extrusion of low carbon steel. But it would fail in cold forging of stainless steel. If 5% organic borate is added into the oil contain ing MoS2, the cold forging of stainless steel can be performed success fully. It was found through surface analysis that the organic borate f ormed a complex layer composed of adsorption film, deposit film and pe rmeating film. The complex layer improves the lubricity of the oil and enables the cold forging to be carried out smoothly.
