Surveys of the insects attacking common purslane Portulaca oleracea we
re carried out in Trinidad and other locations in the Caribbean and So
uth America to assess their potential for biological control of this w
eed in Papua New Guinea. Host-range studies were conducted on two of t
hese insects, and several species are recommended for further investig
ations and eventual release in countries where Po. oleracea is a serio
us weed. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
