Abstract
An outbreak of acute histoplasmosis occurred among eight Japanese peop le who were exposed to bat guano in a cave near Manaus, Brazil. The re sulting epidemic was studied with serial clinical, serologic and radio logic examinations. Eight (100 %) of the individuals showed serologic evidence of histoplasmosis and 7 (87.5 %) had symptoms consistent with those of the disease. Until now the cave involved was never documente d as being endemic for histoplasmosis. The threat of Histoplasma capsu latum infection in bat-occupied caves should be emphasized to travelle rs and physicians.
