REDUCING SPECIALTY BED USE

Saint Joseph Hospital is a tertiary care teaching facility with 602 li censed beds. In 1992 it was noted that there was a significant rise in the use of specialty beds within the hospital. Guidelines for selecti on, initiation, and termination were nonexistent. In an effort to redu ce high costs associated with specialty bed use a study was conducted to determine appropriate selection criteria and monitor patient outcom es.
