Abstract
We extend the linearized version of the Amol'd energy-Casimir (EC) met hod for the stability of hydrodynamic hows. This extension permits us to treat cases in which the critical point of the EC functional is a s addle, rather than an extremum. The basic idea is illustrated by appli cation to channel flow with a free surface, in the presence of rotatio n and bottom topography.
