Abstract
The structure of arnottin II (2) was determined to be 3, 4-dehydro-6, 7-methylenedioxy-1-tetralone-2-spiro-3'-(6, 7-dimethoxyphthalide) by i ts synthesis. The exciton chirality method on the Cotton effects in th e CD spectrum revealed the absolute stereochemistry as an R configurat ion. The biosynthetical relationship of 2 to chelerythrine (3), a benz o[c]phenanthridine alkaloid, is speculated.
