ARNOTTIN-II, A UNIQUE SPIRO COMPOUND COMPOSED OF A 3,4-DEHYDRO-1-TETRALONE AND A PHTHALIDE SKELETON - IS IT BIOSYNTHETICALLY RELATED TO A BENZO[C]PHENANTHRIDINE ALKALOID

The structure of arnottin II (2) was determined to be 3, 4-dehydro-6,
7-methylenedioxy-1-tetralone-2-spiro-3'-(6, 7-dimethoxyphthalide) by i
ts synthesis. The exciton chirality method on the Cotton effects in th
e CD spectrum revealed the absolute stereochemistry as an R configurat
ion. The biosynthetical relationship of 2 to chelerythrine (3), a benz
o[c]phenanthridine alkaloid, is speculated.
