As evidence has substantiated the causal relationship between smokeles
s tobacco (ST) use and oral cancer and noncancerous oral diseases, a p
aucity of information exists concerning ST intervention and cessation
programs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the appropriatenes
s and effectiveness of a self-help manual for postsecondary education
students who were ST users by comparing two related groups (N=130). Re
sults revealed that both related groups produced similar cessation rat
es, 10.6% and 14.1% respectively, comparable to smoking tobacco studie
s that used self-help manuals. Approximately one-half of the subjects
who did not quit reported that they reduced the amount of ST used and
did not increase cigarette smoking.
