Differential cross sections for electron impact excitation of magnesiu
m like Ar6+ ions (3s(21)S-3s3p(1)P) have been measured at collision en
ergies between 27 and 100 eV. For the first time, the experimental stu
dies have been extended towards backward scattering angles. When lower
ing the collision energy the maximum in the excitation cross section i
s shifted to angles > 90 degrees; backward scattering becomes dominant
as predicted by theory.
