Reaction of C(5)Me(5)Ru(PCy(3))Cl (1) with 1-2 atm of carbon dioxide i
n the presence of NaBH4 initially gave the new formate complex C(5)Me(
5)Ru(PCy(3))(eta(2)-OCHO) (2). The complex 2 in the reaction mixture w
as gradually converted into formic acid and the previously known C(5)M
e(5)Ru(PCy(3))(CO)H (3). Deuterium labeling experiments suggest that t
he acid proton of formic acid came from the solvent. A possible mechan
ism of the formation of 2 and subsequent formation of formic acid is d
iscussed.
