The indications of radiation therapy in the treatment of breast cancer
have been revised recently in the light of data on the results of pos
t-mastectomy irradiation and on complications due to irradiation of th
e axillary area. The importance of the time factor has been demonstrat
ed, as well as the efficacy of brachytherapy as an overdosage method.
In patients with tumors of more than 3 cm in diameter, radiation thera
py alone is an alternative to first-line mastectomy. Current indicatio
ns are reviewed.
