A two compartments model of an acetylcholinesterase enzyme system is i
nvestigated. The model is used to investigate the bifurcation, instabi
lity and chaotic behaviour of the system. The investigation has uncove
red a good part of the rich dynamic characteristics of this system, in
cluding: period doubling sequence leading to chaos, banded chaos, full
y developed chaos, interior crisis, tangent bifurcation leading to int
ermittency, periodic windows interrupting chaotic regions and alternat
ing periodic chaotic sequences. The results relate to the phenomena oc
curring in physiological experiments, such as the periodic stimulation
of neural cells and the non-regular functioning of acetycholine recep
tors.
