Abstract
Acetyl nitrate prepared from nitric acid and acetic anhydride react wi th 2,6-dinitrophenol 1 and with 2,4,6,trinitrophenol 2. If N-15-labell ed nitric acid is used to prepare the reagent, the label is found at a ll nitro groups of the products. These results demonstrate isotopic ex change of the nitro groups, and suggest that the reaction may occur by ipso substitution at the existing nitro groups of the aromatic substr ates.
