J. Purnell et al., ULTRAFAST LASER-INDUCED COULOMB EXPLOSION OF CLUSTERS WITH HIGH CHARGE STATES, Chemical physics letters, 229(4-5), 1994, pp. 333-339
Iodine and argon ions, as highly charged as I17+ and Ar8+, are found t
o be formed upon the irradiation of HI clusters and HIArm clusters wit
h an intense femtosecond laser beam. Double peaks are observed for eac
h multicharged species, and identified to result from Coulomb explosio
n of clusters. Kinetic energy release values are calculated from the p
eak splittings, and also directly measured from cutoff potentials usin
g a reflectron as an energy analyzer. The determined values are surpri
singly large, on the order of several hundred electron volts.
