The authors report the system penalty incurred by an optical-to-electr
onic wavelength selector that is based on sharing one of several wavel
ength channels by a single transimpedance amplifier through MESFET swi
tches. It was found that for a system penalty of 1dB, four metal-semic
onductor-metal photodetectors can share a single transimpedance amplif
ier, whereas for a 2dB penalty the number is eight.
