The spin structure of the q-qBAR potential is studied by evaluating fi
ne and hyperfine meson mass splittings. We consider a potential derive
d from a model of the non-perturbative gluon propagator and compare it
s prediction with other approaches. We conclude that the long-distance
part of the potential cannot be a pure scalar and that a vector-scala
r mixture is favoured.
