Populations of Girardinus microdactylus from Isla de Cuba and Isla de
la Juventud were reviewed and shown to represent two subspecies. The p
opulation from Rio Taco-Taco, southwestern Isla de Cuba, represents th
e nominate subspecies G. microdactylus microdactylus, whereas that fro
m Isla de la Juventud represent the nominate subspecies G. microdactyl
us rivasi. These two subspecies differ with respect to 11 morphometric
al and 3 meristic characteristics in males, and in females 9 and 4 cha
racters respectively. The morphometrical characters were significantly
lower in specimens from Isla de Cuba, i.e. G. microdactylus microdact
ylus, whereas the meristic characters were significantly higher in spe
cimens from Isla de la Juventud, i.e. G. microdactylus rivasi.
