From the 13th till the 22nd July 1993, flying bats were recorded by me
ans of a SKYE bat detector at Suha Punta (a tourist centre) and its en
virons, in the forested SW part of the island of Rab. Two species, of
which Pipistrellus kuhli was abundant and Hypsugo savii was less commo
n, were determined, differing by the nature of their echo-location sig
nals, the height of flight and habitat. Foraging P. kuhli were registe
red both in the forests and the tourist centre, flying amongst tree cr
owns, around buildings and street lamps, sometimes as low as 2 m above
the ground. Foraging H. savii were only recorded close to the coast,
flying high above cliffs, the sea or above the trees close to the coas
t.
