B. Wittkowsky et al., STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF FRACTURE-TOUGHNESS DATA OF TI-AL-SI-NB ALLOYS, Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 187(2), 1994, pp. 105-111
A statistical analysis was applied to the fracture toughness data of b
rittle hypoeutectic and eutectic Ti-Al-Si-Nb alloys consisting of the
two intermetallic phases (Ti,Nb)(3)(Al,Si) and (Ti,Nb)(5)(Si,Al)(3) wi
th differing volume fractions of the silicide phase. Model calculation
s were performed using a simple damage mechanical approach that relate
s the statistical properties of toughness data to a statistical distri
bution of local strengths which accounts for microstructural features
of the alloys. The good correlation observed between the experimental
findings and the results of the numerical simulations do not support t
he ''weakest link'' model as the underlying failure mechanism of britt
le Ti-Al-Si-Nb alloys.
