Anisotropic Cu-O islands form striped periodic supergratings upon anne
aling an oxygen-exposed Cu(110) surface. While the formation of these
striped phases has been attributed to long-range repulsive forces betw
een stripes, we show using the one-dimensional lattice gas model and M
onte Carlo simulations that short range adsorbate-adsorbate interactio
ns are capable of producing striped phases.
