Abstract
During the summer of 1988, fire raged through the Greater Yellowstone area with an intensity unseen in recorded history. These massive fores t fires reshaped the region's vegetation composition, ecological proce sses, and even its landform. Nearly every development in Yellowstone P ark and most of the communities along its boundaries were threatened. Only when fall storms cooled the air and dropped snow did the fires su bside.
