Abstract
Gangliosides perform protective functions in the central nervous syste m. This paper describes a study of the effect of ganglioside administr ation on toluene neurotoxicity. Rat brain met-enkephalin immunostainin g in the central amygdaloid nuclei showed changes in rats treated simu ltaneously with gangliosides and toluene with respect to rats treated with toluene alone. It is suggested that gangliosides prevent toluene neurotoxicity at this level, leading to hypothetical neurobehavioral c hanges.
