In a search for inhibitors of RNA-directed DNA polymerases a new isola
ctarane sesquiterpenoid, hyphodontal (1), was isolated from fermentati
ons of a Canadian Hyphodontia species. Its structure was elucidated by
spectroscopic methods. Hyphodontal strongly inhibits the growth of se
veral yeasts and is a non-competitive inhibitor of avian myeloblastosi
s virus (K-i 346 mu M) and Moloney murine leukemia virus (K-i 112 mu M
) reverse transcriptases. In addition, cytotoxic and antifungal activi
ties were observed.
