The pheromone receptor specificity and threshold concentrations have b
een determined for spermatozoid chemotaxis in Laminaria digitata in st
ructure-activity studies. The results are in agreement with the curren
t concept on the pheromone receptor interaction in brown algae, which
is based on mutually-induced dipole-dipole interaction, dispersion for
ces and hydrophobic forces. Comparison with the receptor specificity i
n pheromone-induced spermatozoid release in the same species indicates
that different pheromone receptors are involved in these two function
s.
