Perianal burn wounds often cannot be cured by conventional split-thick
ness skin grafting procedures. This is due to the mechanical stress an
d the enormous bacterial colonization. Transplantation of small skin p
ieces, submerged into the granulation tissue, is able to produce small
epithelial islands within 2 weeks. These enlarge continuously and pro
duce complete epithelialisation in the further course. Own results wit
h 7 burn patients prove that this technique is suitable to epitheliali
ze gluteal and perianal problem wounds with comparatively little expen
diture.
