In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the distribut
ion of health care and finance in the UK. This paper reviews the accum
ulating evidence. It discusses the empirical measures of equity used i
n the various studies and the issues involved in the empirical constru
ction of these measures. The main findings on both the delivery and fi
nance side are presented and an extension of these cross-sectional ana
lyses to an investigation of the lifetime equity in delivery and finan
ce based on data from a micro-simulation model is discussed.
