A technical and economic assessment of the feasibility of recovering c
hloride-containing bleach filtrates in a conventional kraft recovery s
ystem has been completed. This investigation has led to the developmen
t of a process for recovering filtrates from the bleach plant. The pro
cess is applicable for both hardwoods and softwoods. Filtrates from th
e bleach plant are used for brownstock washing and are thereby recover
ed in the conventional recovery cycle. A process was developed to remo
ve chloride from the mill liquor cycle. Computer simulations predict t
hat the chloride concentration in the mill liquor cycle can be maintai
ned at concentrations typical of inland mills. The process for removin
g chloride also removes potassium compounds.
