E. Capocasale et al., ANTIMICROBIAL PROPHYLAXIS WITH CEFTRIAXONE IN RENAL-TRANSPLANTATION -PROSPECTIVE-STUDY OF 170 PATIENTS, Chemotherapy, 40(6), 1994, pp. 435-440
Due to their uremic state and altered host response induced by immunod
epressive therapy, renal transplant recipients are particularly suscep
tible to infectious complications with high morbidity and mortality. W
e here report the results of a prospective study with 170 renal transp
lant patients, undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of ceftriaxone in t
he prevention of wound and early urinary tract infection. No wound inf
ection was observed, however, 12 patients (7.1%) developed urinary tra
ct infections. On the basis of these data, we recommend ceftriaxone pr
ophylaxis as a safe and effective measure to prevent transplant wound
infection and to reduce the incidence of postoperative urinary tract i
nfection.
