The van der Waals contribution to the work of adhesion at metal-oxide
interfaces is analytically derived within the framework of a dielectri
c continuum model. Calculated estimates are shown to nicely reproduce
the trends deduced from measurements of the overall adhesion energy. F
urthermore, the quantitative agreement is satisfactory, especially for
low-density metals (noble metals). This suggests that the van der Waa
ls forces play an important role in the adhesion mechanism at metal-ox
ide interfaces.
