Adsorption of 2-amino-1-ethanol (monoethanolamine or MEA) with chemica
lly modified silica films has been studied using multi-internal reflec
tion (MIR) and X ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). MEA does not re
act on native silicon oxide. It adsorbs on mixed baron silicon oxide l
ayers and on chemically prepared silicon layers through its alcohol te
rmination. Our results also suggest the existence of a charge transfer
between the nan bonding orbital of the amine termination of the molec
ule and the silicon acid site of the 'chemical' oxide layer.
