Ai. Alsamarrai et al., GLUTEAL MYONEUROVASCULAR FLAP TRANSFER (GMFT) FOR ANORECTAL SPHINCTERRECONSTRUCTION IN FECAL INCONTINENCE, Saudi medical journal, 15(4), 1994, pp. 298-301
Objective: To assess the surgical procedure bilateral gluteal myoneuro
vascular flap transfer (GMFT) in the treatment of faecal incontinence.
Design: Four patients were operated upon and their postoperative cont
inence was assessed. Setting: GMFT was carried out on four patients wh
o became incontinent for faeces following repair of anorectal malforma
tion. Subject: Most of the corrective operations are based on striated
muscle transposition from regional gracilis and gluteus maximus muscl
es. The rationale of this myoplasty is to provide a contractile muscle
ring around the rectum for active voluntary continence control. Inter
vention: We used a bilateral gluteal myoneurovascular flap transfer to
encircle the rectum to treat faecal incontinence in four children. Th
e technique and postoperative evaluation score system are described. R
esults: Three of the four children had almost normal continence after
the procedure. Conclusion: The GMFT is a valuable treatment in the man
agement of faecal incontinence.
